Do you wear nail polish? If you do, you’re certainly familiar with the toxic smells of both the polishes and the removers needed to take your polish off. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a non-toxic alternative? Turns out there is!

When Blue Planet Green Living received complimentary samples of A Beautiful Life products, we asked our newest contributing writer, Lindsay Render, to test them out for us. Here’s what she had to say. — Julia Wasson, Publisher

Advertised as “long wearing” and “chip resistant,” A Beautiful Life lacquers come in a variety of shades and run $12 for a 12.6 ml bottle. I received two bold sample colors, “80’s Pink” and “Blues.” While these particular colors were not my personal favorites, a few others shown on the website caught my eye: “Venom,” “Silverado,” and “Envy.”

To test the polish, I applied two coats to each toe. A single coat dried in about four minutes, and a double coat took about 15 minutes to dry. After two weeks of wear, only slight chipping had occurred at the very tip of my big toes.

Overall, I was happy with the product: The color was bold and shiny, and applied evenly. And the polish was long lasting.

A Beautiful Life Natural Nail Lacquers are soy based and free of the three toxic chemicals found in most nail polishes: dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene, and formaldehyde.

These polishes would be a safer alternative for children and tweens who are eager to try on mom’s nail polish. Of course, teens and adults will appreciate the pleasant scent and safe chemical formulas, too.

Soy Polish Remover

Along with the polish came a sample of A Beautiful Life Soy Nail Polish Remover. Like the nail lacquers, the remover is also free of DBP, toluene, and formaldehyde. The remover is soy based, as its name implies, exudes a mild citrus scent, and is oily to the touch. A 4 oz. bottle of Soy Polish Remover is priced at $20 on the A Beautiful Life website.

I first tested the remover on the two coats and topcoat of O.P.I. polish I had already been wearing. To remove the majority of polish from the nail on my big toe took vigorous rubbing for over a minute and thirty seconds, longer than I would prefer to spend on a single toe. However, when I used this remover on the A Beautiful Life polish, it was much more efficient, taking less time.

Although I didn’t see this specified in the product information, my recommendation is to use A Beautiful Life’s Soy Nail Polish Remover for taking off A Beautiful Life’s Soy Nail Polish, rather than for non soy-based commercial polishes.

I was pleased with the quality of both nail products, but they are a little on the pricey side. If you have the money, I’d say it’s worth the purchase, considering the fact that these products do not contain the toxic chemicals found in typical petroleum-based nail polishes and removers. Another plus is that A Beautiful Life assures these products are safe for children.

Have you ever tried packing traditional nail polish remover in a suitcase after they’ve once been opened? I haven’t found one that doesn’t leak. Yet, so far, this bottle seems to be air tight and leak proof — an immediate savings for anyone who wants to be able to change their nail polish while traveling.

The All Nighter Styling Powder

The final product I reviewed for A Beautiful Life was a styling powder called The All Nighter. This powder is specifically designed to be used a day or two after you wash your hair, although it can be used on clean hair as well. It’s advertised to absorb oil, add texture and body, and preserve last night’s hairstyle.

The All Nighter is free of paraben, aluminum, talc, and silica. Along with a platinum/neutral shade, the powder comes in shades to match blonde, red, brown, and black hair. You can find The All Nighter Styling Powder in 1 oz. bottles for $18 on these two websites: A Beautiful Life and Styling Powder.

The All Nighter Styling Powder sample I received was the platinum/neutral shade. I used the powder one and two days after I washed my hair. Through the second day, the powder succeeded in absorbing oil and adding texture and body. I even received compliments on my hair the second day. The platinum/neutral shade was a white powder, but it blended in fine with my dark brown hair. I am curious to try the brunette shade, however.

If you want to add body and texture to your hair, or if you don’t prefer to wash your hair every day, but have trouble with excess oil, then I recommend this product. I think the price is reasonable for the amount you get; it should last a while.
