Thanks for reading, Laurel. I agree. I like to think of happiness like any other endeavor--if it's not hard, it's not worth doing.

I agree - happiness is not the be all end all of our existence here. Like anything else, happiness is worth "working for". Happiness is not just bliss, nirvana and cloud 9, but comes from the satisfaction of doing something that is worthwhile, and doing it successfully. Ask anyone who has planted a tree, or helped people in need, or volunteered for the homeless or to help animals - these people are happy because they are GIVING. It is concentrating on someone or something beyond yourself.

Is that a paradox? In some ways, yes. But anything worthwhile is not easily won. And the author that wrote "Happy people are more concerned with the problems of other people and more likely to take action to help" was correct. I think we instinctively realize we are on this earth to help each other and to help the planet, and when we are unhappy, it is because we are becoming too self-centered and that never satisfies. Just like love, happiness is gained because we give and receive in return.
